Question 1: Do they publish their prices online?
Why this matters: A standard torsion spring replacement is a standard job. The parts cost what they cost. The labor takes roughly the same time. There's no reason a company can't publish a price range for routine work — unless the price changes based on what they think you'll pay.
What to look for: Look for specific dollar amounts on their website — not "call for a quote" or "competitive pricing." If they publish prices, they're inviting comparison. If they don't, ask yourself why.

Question 2: Do they charge emergency or after-hours fees?
Why this matters: Garage doors don't politely fail between 9 and 5. Many companies add $50 to $150 for evenings, weekends, or holidays, and some don't mention it until the invoice shows up. That's not a small detail. That's the difference between a fair repair and feeling trapped.
What to look for: Ask the exact question before you book: "Is the price the same tonight as it is Tuesday afternoon?" If the answer is fuzzy, assume the fee exists. A straight company can answer this in one sentence.

Question 3: Will they confirm the total price before starting work?

What to look for: Ask: "Will the final invoice match the quote, or could it change?" A good company will confirm the total before touching a single bolt. If anything changes mid-job, they explain why and get your approval before proceeding.

Question 4: Are the technicians employees or subcontractors?
Why this matters: This one catches a lot of homeowners off guard. A significant number of garage door companies — including some well-known ones — don't employ their technicians directly. They dispatch subcontractors: independent operators who work under the company's name but aren't trained, supervised, or accountable in the same way. One giveaway is the vehicle. Independent contractors often show up in an unmarked van or pickup because they're using their own vehicle, not a company fleet.
What to look for: Ask directly: "Is the person coming to my house your employee?" If the answer involves phrases like "trusted partners" or "vetted contractors," they're using subcontractors. Then pay attention when the technician arrives. An unmarked vehicle is often your clue that the person at your house is an independent contractor, not a real employee operating inside a company system.

If you can't find those terms in writing before you hire the company, they don't exist in any enforceable way.
What to look for: Check their website for published warranty terms. If the warranty is only mentioned in vague language — "guaranteed satisfaction," "we'll make it right" — it's a handshake, not a contract. The difference matters when something fails six months later.

Question 6: Can you verify their reviews and credentials independently?
Why this matters: Any company can put five-star quotes on their homepage. The question is whether you can verify them yourself. Google reviews are the hardest to fake at scale — each review is tied to a real Google account with a review history. A company with thousands of reviews from accounts that also review restaurants, dentists, and stores is fundamentally more credible than one with 40 reviews from accounts that have never reviewed anything else.
What to look for: Search the company name on Google Maps. Check the total review count, the average rating, and — critically — read some of the reviews. Do the reviewers seem like real people? Do they mention specific details (technician names, pricing, what was fixed)?
