Garage Door Cable Replacement — Edmonton
What Cables Do — And Why Edmonton Destroys Them
Garage door cables are braided steel ropes wound around drums at the top of the door and attached to the bottom brackets. When your springs unwind, the cables transfer that energy to lift the door evenly on both sides. Each cable handles 75–125 lbs of tension on every cycle.
Edmonton is uniquely hard on cables. The North Saskatchewan river valley creates localized humidity that most people don't associate with a prairie city. That moisture gets into the braided steel strands and corrodes them from the inside out — you won't see the damage until the cable snaps. Road salt tracked in on your tires makes it worse.
We see more corroded cables in Edmonton than in any other city we operate. If your garage is near the river valley — Riverdale, Rossdale, Cloverdale, Strathcona — inspect your cables annually after the 5-year mark.

Types of Cable Systems in Edmonton Homes
Which system you have determines the cable type, replacement process, and cost.
Torsion Cable System
90% of Edmonton Homes
Cables run from the bottom brackets up and around drums at the top of the door. When the springs unwind, the cables spool onto the drums and lift the door evenly on both sides. Standard replacement costs $250–$290. Some companies will tell you a crooked door means you need a new opener — always get the cables checked first.
Extension Spring Cables
Older Edmonton Homes
Cables run through a pulley system along the horizontal tracks. More common in pre-2000 homes and garages with low headroom. These systems also use safety cables that run through the centre of the extension spring — if your safety cables are missing, we install them during the repair at no extra charge.
Torquemaster System
Wayne Dalton Doors Only
Springs enclosed inside a tube above the door. Common on Wayne Dalton doors from Edmonton's early 2000s builds. When a Torquemaster fails, most companies just replace with another Torquemaster. We recommend converting to standard torsion ($580) — it's more reliable, any technician can service it, and you're not locked into proprietary parts.
Signs Your Cables Need Replacing
If you see any immediate signs, stop using the door. Operating with a broken cable risks bending panels, damaging tracks, and injury.
Cable Has Snapped
- —Door hangs crooked — one side lower than the other
- —Loose cable hanging from the drum or coiled on the floor
- —Door jams partway open or won't close straight
- —Grinding or scraping noises as the door tries to move
Schedule Service Soon
- !Visible fraying — individual wire strands poking out
- !Rust or discolouration on the cable surface
- !Cable looks kinked, bent, or has a thin spot
- !Door wobbles or hesitates during travel
River Valley Corrosion Warning
Homes near Edmonton's river valley — Riverdale, Rossdale, Cloverdale, Gold Bar, Strathcona, and Bonnie Doon — experience faster cable deterioration than properties on higher ground. Bottom brackets sitting near concrete floors collect condensation, and the higher ambient humidity accelerates internal corrosion.
If your home is in a river valley neighbourhood and your cables are 5+ years old, schedule an inspection. A $120–$180 maintenance visit can catch fraying before it becomes a $250–$290 emergency.

Why We Always Replace Both Cables
Some companies replace just the broken one to quote you less. That's a short-term win for them — and a second service call for you.
Both cables were installed at the same time and have cycled the same number of times. If one has snapped or is visibly frayed, the other is at the same stage of wear. Replacing just the broken one means the old cable fails within weeks — costing you a second service call at the same price.
More importantly, one new cable and one worn cable create uneven tension on the door. The door lifts crookedly, puts stress on the tracks and rollers, and can cause the new cable to wear prematurely.
Both cables together costs the same in labour as one. The extra cable itself adds minimal cost. There's no scenario where replacing just one makes sense.
Why Cables Fail Faster in Edmonton
Most garage door companies use the same cables everywhere and quote the same lifespan. Edmonton's conditions are different — and they don't tell you that.
River Valley Humidity
Edmonton's North Saskatchewan river valley creates higher ambient humidity than most prairie cities. Moisture gets into the braided steel strands and corrodes them from the inside out. Homes in Riverdale, Rossdale, Cloverdale, and Gold Bar are hit hardest.
Freeze-Thaw Cycles
Water seeps into cable braids during warm spells, then expands when it freezes. This micro-fracturing weakens individual strands over hundreds of cycles. By the time you see external fraying, internal damage is already advanced.
Road Salt Corrosion
Salt tracked in on tires and boots settles near the bottom brackets where cables attach. The salt accelerates corrosion on the cable ends and brackets — the most common failure point we see in Edmonton.
Sustained Cold Load
In extended cold periods, door components contract and the opener works harder. That increased strain transfers to cables at the drum connection point, gradually weakening the attachment.

Cable Replacement FAQ — Edmonton
Standard cable replacement costs $250–$290 + GST for both cables. That includes parts, labour, full inspection, and a 1-year warranty. 10-foot high door cables cost $340. Premium cables with brackets and rollers (5-year warranty) cost $380. No extra charges for evenings, weekends, or holidays.
Cables fail from normal wear, corrosion (Edmonton's river valley humidity and road salt accelerate this), a broken spring putting sudden load on the cable, or friction from misaligned drums. Internal corrosion is the most common cause — moisture gets into the braided strands and rusts from the inside out. You won't see the damage until it snaps.
No. A snapped cable means the door is unbalanced and can fall on one side or jam in the tracks. Operating it risks bending panels, damaging tracks, and injuring someone. Use your side door and call us for same-day repair.
Always both. Cables wear at the same rate — if one has snapped or is frayed, the other is close behind. Replacing both costs the same in labour and prevents a second service call within weeks.
Typically 7–12 years depending on use and maintenance. Edmonton's humidity (especially near the river valley) and freeze-thaw cycles shorten cable life compared to drier climates. Annual lubrication and keeping your garage dry extends lifespan. Inspect cables annually after the 5-year mark.
Not always, but they're related. A breaking spring puts sudden shock load on the cables. If your spring broke and the cables look frayed, we'll recommend replacing both. Spring + cable combo replacement costs $580–$680 — cheaper than two separate service calls at $380–$480 + $250–$290.
Edmonton's North Saskatchewan river valley creates higher ambient humidity than most prairie cities. Garages near the valley — Riverdale, Rossdale, Cloverdale, Gold Bar — have more condensation collecting on concrete floors, which accelerates bottom bracket and cable corrosion.
