How Garage Door Sensors Work
Safety sensors consist of two units mounted on each side of your garage door, 4–6 inches above the floor:
- Sending unit (transmitter) — Emits an invisible infrared beam across the door opening. Usually has an amber/yellow LED.
- Receiving unit (receiver) — Detects the infrared beam. Usually has a green LED.
When the beam is unbroken — both sensors aligned and clear — the green LED glows steady and the door operates normally. When something breaks the beam, the door immediately stops or reverses.
Why they exist: Before 1993, garage doors caused injuries and deaths when they closed on children and pets. Federal law now requires all automatic openers to include photo-eye sensors.

Even a small bump from a bike, garbage can, or foot can knock them out of alignment. Signs: one or both LEDs blinking instead of steady.
Dirty Sensor Lenses

Try These Steps Before Calling

Check for Obstructions
Look for anything blocking the beam path: boxes, tools, garbage cans, brooms, shoes, toys, or cobwebs. Remove and try again.
Clean the Lenses
Wipe both sensor lenses with a soft, dry cloth. Remove dust, dirt, cobwebs, or moisture. Don't use harsh chemicals — a dry microfiber cloth works best.
Check the LEDs
Sending unit (amber/yellow) should glow steady. Receiving unit (green) should glow steady when aligned — blinks when misaligned or blocked.
Test for Sunlight
If the door works at night but not during the day, shade the receiving sensor with your hand while pressing close. If it works, sunlight is the issue.
Gently Adjust Alignment
If the green LED blinks, try gently adjusting the receiving sensor until the LED glows steady. Sensors have slight play in their brackets.
Check the Wires
Inspect wires from each sensor to the opener. Look for obvious damage, loose connections, or wires that have been pulled or pinched.

You may have discovered that holding down the wall button forces the door to close even when sensors detect a problem. This is an emergency bypass only.

The opener's logic board is degrading
The opener processes the sensor signal through a small circuit board that handles every input from the wall button, remotes, sensors, and limit switches. On openers 15+ years old, board components can drift out of spec from years of thermal cycling. The symptom looks like sensor failure — door won't close, false reverses, intermittent response — but the cause can be the board misreading correct sensor signals as faults.
Sensor wiring has corroded over multiple winters
Calcium chloride and road salt entering the garage in winter accelerate corrosion on low-voltage sensor wiring, particularly where the wire meets the sensor housing. By year 12–15 on original wiring, the signal can arrive at the opener intermittently degraded. Looks like sensor failure, isn't sensor failure.
