Walk-Through Garage Doors in Calgary
Think about how you use your garage every day. You walk in to grab a tool, check on something, or head to the car. Every single time, you open the entire door — letting out all the heat in winter, all the cool air in summer. Most people don't think twice about it because they've never had another option.
Ryterna's walk-through doors (also called wicket doors or pass-through doors) change that. A full-sized pedestrian door built directly into the garage door panel. It looks like part of the door because it is.

Why Calgary Homeowners Are Adding Walk-Through Doors
Most garage door companies in Calgary don't even offer this option. They'll sell you a standard sectional door and never mention that a built-in pedestrian entrance exists. That's because most North American door manufacturers don't make them — it's a European innovation that hasn't crossed the Atlantic. Except through us.
As Canada's only authorized Ryterna dealer, we're the only company in the country that can factory-integrate a walk-through door into your garage door. Not retrofitted. Not bolted on after the fact. Built in during manufacturing for a clean, flush-mounted finish that looks like it was always meant to be there.
Quick Pedestrian Access
Walk in and out without triggering the full door opener. No 15-second wait for the door to cycle open and closed.
80% Less Air Exchange
Open less than 2m² instead of 10m² for the full door. In a Calgary winter, that’s a real difference on your heating bill.
Double Your Spring Life
Every time you use the walk-through instead of the full door, you save a spring cycle. Cut your full-door usage in half and your springs last twice as long.
Factory-Integrated Quality
Precision-fit during manufacturing with proper weathersealing. Retrofitted pedestrian doors leak air and look like afterthoughts.

What Does a Walk-Through Door Look Like?
From the outside, you'd barely know it's there. The pedestrian door sits flush with the garage door panels, color-matched and weathersealed. No awkward frame sticking out, no visible hinges on the exterior. Open it, and you've got a full-height doorway — 800mm wide and 2,100mm tall as standard, with custom sizing available up to 1,200mm wide.
The handle and lock are integrated into the door face. An automatic closer pulls it shut behind you, so you never have to worry about leaving it ajar in a Calgary snowstorm.
Threshold Options
Choose between standard and low-profile thresholds based on your needs.
| Threshold Type | Height | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Threshold | 120mm (4.7″) | General pedestrian use; enhanced weathersealing |
| Low Threshold | 25mm (1″) | Bicycles, wheelchairs, strollers, trolleys, mobility devices |
The low threshold features a sloped profile on both sides for smooth crossing. Available only for doors up to 5 metres wide.
How Walk-Through Doors Extend Spring Lifespan
Reducing full door cycles by 50% can significantly extend your spring’s rated lifespan. Spring replacement typically costs $380–$480 including labour.
| Spring Type | Rated Cycles | Expected Lifespan* |
|---|---|---|
| Industry Standard (Amarr, Clopay, C.H.I.) | 10,000 | ~7 years |
| Ryterna Standard | 25,000 | ~17 years |
| Ryterna Upgrade Option | 50,000–100,000 | 35+ years (effective lifetime) |
*Based on 4 full door cycles per day, average residential use. With a walk-through door reducing full cycles by 50%, effective lifespan doubles.
Who Should Get a Walk-Through Door?
If you use your garage as a daily entrance, a workshop, a gym, or storage that you access multiple times a day — this feature pays for itself. Every time you walk through instead of cycling the full door, you save energy, save a spring cycle, and save 30 seconds of your life.
- Homes without a separate side door into the garage
- Garages used as workshops, gyms, or hobby spaces
- Families with kids or pets who use the garage constantly
- Attached garages where heat retention matters in winter
- Anyone tired of waiting for the door to open and close for a 10-second errand
Honest Trade-offs
We tell you what other companies won't:
- Adds a 25–120mm step threshold (trip hazard to consider)
- Slightly lower insulation at the integration point vs. a solid panel
- Not worth it if you rarely enter the garage on foot
- Factory-integrated — not retrofitted
- Available on any Ryterna sectional door
- Left or right hand opening
- Low 25mm threshold option for accessibility
- 10-year panel warranty, 5-year hardware warranty
Walk-Through Door vs. Side Garage Door
Which one actually makes sense?
Once a Calgary homeowner learns walk-through doors exist, the next question is usually the same one: "Couldn't I just frame a regular door into the side wall of my garage instead?"
You can. People do it all the time. But the comparison is less even than it looks at first glance.
| What You're Comparing | Walk-Through Door (Built-In) | Side Garage Door (Framed-In) |
|---|---|---|
| Installation scope | Specified with your new Ryterna door | Cut into garage wall, frame, insulate, finish, re-side |
| Typical Calgary total cost | $900–$1,200 add-on to a new door | $1,500–$3,500 depending on siding, electrical, and permit |
| Aesthetic integration | Flush, colour-matched, invisible from the street | Separate door visible on the side wall, rarely matches |
| Weather seal | Factory-engineered seal on all four sides | Depends entirely on the contractor who framed it |
| Security | 3-point locking mechanism included | Single deadbolt typical on a standard entry door |
| Accessibility | 25mm low-threshold option for wheelchairs and strollers | Depends on the exterior door chosen |
| Warranty | 5-year Ryterna hardware warranty on the walk-through | Separate door, separate warranty if any |
| Best for existing garages | No, has to be factory-integrated into a new door | Yes, can be retrofitted to your current setup |
The side-door retrofit still wins in one specific situation: you're not replacing your garage door anytime soon. Walk-through doors have to be built into the panel at the Ryterna factory, they can't be cut into an existing door after the fact. So if your current garage door has another eight years of life in it and you want pedestrian access now, framing in a side entrance is the honest answer.
If you're replacing the garage door anyway, which most Calgary homeowners do every 15 to 25 years, the walk-through comes out ahead on cost, sealing, security, and appearance. The $900–$1,200 add-on is typically half the cost of a side-door retrofit with a better result.
Most Calgary garage door companies won't put this comparison in front of you. That's not because it isn't a fair question, it is. It's because they can't supply the walk-through option, so the answer that helps the customer doesn't help them. They hand you off to a general contractor and the conversation ends there.
Warranty Coverage
Ask any other garage door company what their warranty covers on a walk-through door. They can't answer — because they don't offer them. Ryterna provides documented, component-specific coverage:
| Component | Warranty Period |
|---|---|
| Panels (rust-through, foam delamination) | 10 Years |
| Springs, cables, drums, rollers, hinges | 5 Years |
| Walk-through door hardware (locks, closer, hinges) | 5 Years |

Walk-Through Garage Door FAQ
A walk-through door — also called a wicket door or pass-through door — is a pedestrian-sized door built directly into a garage door panel. It allows you to enter and exit the garage without opening the full door. Ryterna factory-integrates these during manufacturing for a flush, sealed finish.
The walk-through door is a $900–$1,200 add-on to the base Ryterna door price, depending on configuration (threshold type, hinge position, custom sizing). This includes the auto-closer, 3-point lock, and handle.
No — Ryterna walk-through doors are factory-integrated during manufacturing. They cannot be retrofitted to an existing door. If you want this feature, it needs to be specified when ordering your new Ryterna door.
Yes. The 25mm (1″) low threshold option features a sloped profile on both sides for smooth crossing with wheelchairs, strollers, bicycles, and mobility devices. Available on doors up to 5 metres wide.
There is a slight reduction in insulation at the integration point compared to a solid panel. However, the walk-through door itself is insulated and weathersealed. The net energy savings from not opening the full door multiple times daily far outweigh the minor insulation reduction.
Yes. Every Ryterna walk-through door includes a 3-point locking mechanism, handle, and automatic door closer as standard hardware. All covered under a 5-year warranty.
Yes. Every Ryterna walk-through door ships with a factory-installed safety contact switch wired into the garage door opener circuit. When the walk-through is open, the full door opener is automatically disabled, it physically cannot be triggered by remote, wall button, or smartphone app until the walk-through is fully closed. Works with the Sommer openers we supply as an authorized Sommer dealer, and with most other residential openers that accept a standard safety input.
Nearly all Ryterna sectional configurations accept a factory-integrated walk-through door, standard ribbed panels, Slick smooth panels, Okoume marine-grade wood cladding, and Retro carriage-house designs. The main technical limits are on door width (up to 7 metres) and on a few custom Alumax configurations where full-panel CNC milling may interfere with the walk-through cutout. We confirm compatibility against your specific design choices during the quote.
The walk-through panel is insulated and weathersealed to the same spec as the main door, polyurethane foam core with a multi-contour perimeter seal. Where a retrofitted side door often leaks air around a contractor-framed opening, the Ryterna walk-through is engineered as part of the door panel at the factory. Across our Calgary installs since becoming Canada's authorized Ryterna dealer, we haven't had a walk-through seal fail through a Chinook cycle, which is the real durability test for anything mounted on a Calgary garage.
Most Calgary garages are. You need a garage door between roughly 2.4 and 7 metres wide (8 to 23 feet), standard headroom for a Ryterna sectional, and floor space in front of the door for the walk-through to swing outward about 800mm. Single-car 9×7 doors and double-car 16×7 or 16×8 doors, Calgary's two most common setups, both qualify without modification. If you're unsure, we confirm fit during the free in-home consultation.
